Atopic Eczema in Adulthood

Atopic eczema is a genetically inherited condition, which is predominantly active in childhood, but does persist into adulthood in some people.

As an adult, the eczema tends to be a reaction to contact with elements and the hands are commonly the only affected site.

Choice of employment is a key factor with jobs that involve regular contact with chemicals (such as engineering and hairdressing) needing to be avoided.

Treatment is generally symptomatic requiring the use of emollient and topical steroids. See the Childhood Eczema section for more details.
